Surely there is another location from which System.Net.Http.Formatting.dll can be referenced! But where?

IOW, by selecting Tools &gt; Library Package Manager &gt; Package Manager Console, and entering:

...and it now compiles and runs and works as expected, but that is obviously &quot;not the preferred method&quot;

From where do I reference a missing assembly (System.Net.Http.Formatting)?

When I open the properties window of one of the referenced dlls in my project in Visual Studio I see a Version and also a runtime version .

Actually it is Rhino.Mocks library I am checking. And I see 

* Runtime Version : v2.0.50727
* Version : 3.6.0.0

What is the difference? (Does it mean I am not able to use 3.6.0.0 of the Rhino Mocks?)

What&#39;s the best way to cache expensive data obtained from reflection? For example most fast serializers cache such information so they don&#39;t need to reflect every time they encounter the same type again. They might even generate a dynamic method which they look up from the type.

Traditionally I&#39;ve used a normal static dictionary for that. For example:

    private static ConcurrentDictionary&lt;Type, Action&lt;object&gt;&gt; cache;

    {
        Action&lt;object&gt; action;
        if(cache.TryGetValue(o.GetType(), out action)) //Simple lookup, fast!

This leaks a bit of memory, but since it does that only once per Type and types lived as long as the `AppDomain` I didn&#39;t consider that a problem.

Since .net 4
-----

But now .net 4 introduced [Collectible Assemblies for Dynamic Type Generation](http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd554932(VS.100).aspx). If I ever used `DoSomething` on an object declared in the collectible assembly that assembly won&#39;t ever get unloaded. Ouch.

So what&#39;s the best way to cache per type information in .net 4 that doesn&#39;t suffer from this problem? The easiest solution I can think of is a:

    private static ConcurrentDictionary&lt;WeakReference, TCachedData&gt; cache.

But the `IEqualityComparer&lt;T&gt;` I&#39;d have to use with that would behave very strangely and would probably violate the contract too. I&#39;m not sure how fast the lookup would be either.

Another idea is to use an expiration timeout. Might be the simplest solution, but feels a bit inelegant.

In the cases where the type is supplied as generic parameter I can use a nested generic class which should not suffer from this problem. But his doesn&#39;t work if the type is supplied in a variable.

    class MyReflection

        internal Cache&lt;T&gt;
        {
            internal static TData data;
        }
        
        void DoSomething&lt;T&gt;()
        {
            DoSomethingWithData(Cache&lt;T&gt;.data);
            //Obviously simplified, should have similar creation logic to the previous code.

**Update**: One idea I&#39;ve just had is using `Type.AssemblyQualifiedName` as the key. That should uniquely identify that type without keeping it in memory. I might even get away with using referential identity on this string.

One problem that remains with this solution is that the cached value might keep a reference to the type too. And if I use a weak reference for that it will most likely expire far before the assembly gets unloaded. And I&#39;m not sure how cheap it is to Get a normal reference out of a weak reference. Looks like I need to do some testing and benchmarking.

Caching reflection data

I am using the &quot;InternalsVisibleTo&quot; attribute with an assembly to expose the internal methods/classes to my unit test project. 

I now need to install that assembly into the GAC, so I need to give it a strong name. When I try doing that, I get the following error in Visual Studio.

ok, so then I tried to reinstall like every nuget package, and it seems to have added back the 4.5 version of the newtonsoft.json.dll, but I&#39;m getting the same error. My project&#39;s Target freamework is .NET 4.5.1 and here is the stack trace I&#39;m getting now:

I am trying to get the executing assembly version in C# 3.0 using the following code:

How can I get the executing assembly version?

I&#39;m looking for pointers, suggestions, and even dictation on how to manage the three different assembly version numbers for a .NET assembly.   The Product version is the simplest, as this seems would normally be dictated by business.  Then, the file version seems to be for versioning between deployments, where the actual assembly version is only used when shipping.

Right now I&#39;m just looking for a simple means of labeling test and maintenance releases of an assembly on which none depend, so I am looking at auto-incrementing build and revision numbers on the file version, and for final release, copying the current file version to the assembly version.  The product is in production use, but still under development - you know - one of those small company, no change control infrastructure situations.

Best practices/guidance for maintaining assembly version numbers

I want to view the folders and sub folders in [GAC][1]. Also want to know about adding and removing from [GAC][1].

   

To install we write this lines in command prompt by opening  `Visual Studio command prompt`:-

 `gacutil /i [assembly path]`

But to uninstall we need only:-

  `gacutil /u [assembly name]`

How to view the Folder and Files in GAC?

I&#39;m trying to scan an assembly for types implementing a specific interface using code similar to this:

My problem is, that I get a `ReflectionTypeLoadException` when calling `asm.GetTypes()` in some cases, e.g. if the assembly contains types referencing an assembly which is currently not available.

In my case, I&#39;m not interested in the types which cause the problem. The types I&#39;m searching for do not need the non-available assemblies.

The question is: is it possible to somehow skip/ignore the types which cause the exception but still process the other types contained in the assembly?

No assembly found containing an OwinStartupAttribute Error

Could you please explain what the practical usage is for the `internal` keyword in C#?

I know that the `internal` modifier limits access to the current assembly, but when and in which circumstance should I use it?

I have found plenty of information out there about this error: &#39;ERROR: Could not load file or assembly &#39;*.dll&#39; or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.’ 
But i haven&#39;t found answer specific to my scenario. 
My site is deploy on 6 different production servers, only on one server i am facing this issue. The issue is random, but after it happens once, it continues until the site is recompile by done a small modification in web.config file(i know trick, after modification in web.config recompile the web application) and site on that server start working.
Yesterday, issue was reproducing after one month period of working.
We can&#39;t afford this issue on production.

It also doesn&#39;t appear when I build or anything. I can run the project fine, it happens when I try to add an entity framework templated controller:

1) Turning Generator Serialization Assembly in project settings to on, off, and auto.

**None of these solutions work**. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this???
This error occurs for any custom assembly from nuget or my own projects due to their location existing on the network space, but only when trying to add an EF templated controller. I can build and run the program fine.

Could not load file or assembly HRESULT: 0x80131515 (When adding controller to MVC project that has assembly references on network drive)

I&#39;ve read about this technique: [Shared assembly info in VS projects - JJameson&#39;s blog](http://www.technologytoolbox.com/blog/jjameson/archive/2009/04/03/shared-assembly-info-in-visual-studio-projects.aspx )

Basically it means to create a SharedAssemblyInfo.cs with versioning information about the assembly, and adding this file as Link to all projects of the solution, so the actual file resides only in 1 location on disk.

My question deals with 2 scenarios:

1. Existing solution that doesn&#39;t use this mechanism: Is there a way to easily add the ShareAssemblyInfo to all projects? (lets say i have a solution with 50 projects).

2. When creating a new project, by default a new AssemblyInfo.cs is created. However i&#39;d like to link automatically to the SharedAssemblyInfo as well.

Is there any solution for this? what is the common practice?

Shared AssemblyInfo for uniform versioning across the solution

I am using VS2010 and I tried to add a few assemblies from local hard disk to my C# project through file reference. Peeking into the `csproj` file, I found sometimes the file reference appears as

    &lt;Reference Include=&quot;name&quot;&gt;

However sometimes it appears as

    &lt;Reference Include=&quot;name, Version=xxx, Culture=neutral, 
                                              processorArchitecture=MSIL&quot;&gt;

What could cause the difference?

Inspired by k3b&#39;s answer, I did another test. I created a new class library project.

 1. Add a file reference. The initial value of *Specific Version* in *Properties* pane is *False*. The `csproj` file look like

        &lt;Reference Include=&quot;Name&quot;&gt;
          &lt;HintPath&gt;...&lt;/HintPath&gt;
        &lt;/Reference&gt;

 2. Change *Specific Version* in *Properties* pane to *True*. VS adds version in the `Include` attribute.

        &lt;Reference Include=&quot;Name, Version=...&quot;&gt;
          &lt;HintPath&gt;...&lt;/HintPath&gt;
        &lt;/Reference&gt;

 3. Change *Specific Version* in *Properties* pane to *False* again. VS adds a child element `SpecificVersion`.

        &lt;Reference Include=&quot;Name, Version=...&quot;&gt;
          &lt;HintPath&gt;...&lt;/HintPath&gt;
          &lt;SpecificVersion&gt;False&lt;/SpecificVersion&gt;
        &lt;/Reference&gt;

So it seems that the rule is:

 - When *Version* is present in *Include* attribute and there is no `SpecificVersion` child element, the file assembly is configured to be Specific Version
 - The `SpecificVersion` child element is only appended with value *False*.

One thing I still do not understand:

 - For my new test project, if I remove the file reference and add it back again, it goes back to format in point 1, which is the default.
 - For my existing project, if I remove the file reference and add it back again, I get back format in point 3. Although it also means that Specific Version is not used, I am wondering why it does not go back to format in point 1.

Understanding a csproj assembly reference

So I am learning MSIL right now to learn to debug my C# .NET applications.

I&#39;ve always wondered: **what is the purpose of the stack?** 

*Just to put my question in context:&lt;br/&gt;
Why is there a transfer from memory to stack or &quot;loading?&quot; 
On the other hand, why is there a transfer from stack to memory or &quot;storing&quot;?
**Why not just have them all placed in the memory?***

- Is it because it&#39;s faster?
- Is it because it&#39;s RAM based?
- For efficiency?

I&#39;m trying to grasp this to help me understand [CIL][1] codes much more deeply.
